The Harold R. Dunlap: A Legacy of Community Care

Harold Dunlap was born on June 30, 1902, in Illinois, and his family moved to Cairo in 1907. He attended school in Cairo and built his life in the community. In 1933, Harold married Annie Fielding, and they made their home in Cairo together. Harold worked at the Farmer’s Mercantile until the store was sold, after which he purchased the IHC Implement Co. in 1939 and successfully ran the business for two decades.

Beyond his work, Harold was deeply committed to the community. He served as a firefighter for many years and enjoyed fishing in his spare time. Harold and Annie had one daughter, VeRue Herriott. Tragically, VeRue passed away just days before Harold's passing. Annie had preceded them both in 1980.

Harold Dunlap’s legacy of generosity lives on through his estate, which was designated entirely to benefit charitable organizations. The Dunlap Grant was established to preserve and enhance the quality of life in the Cairo area, continuing Harold’s lifelong commitment to his community.

Grant Eligibility

The Greater Grand Island Community Foundation awards Harold R. Dunlap Fund grants to both private and public organizations to address unmet charitable needs and unique program opportunities for essential and emerging issues in Cairo, Nebraska. In order to be eligible for a grant, these organizations fit within the following parameters:

  • Organizations classified as 501(c)(3) charitable organizations by the Internal Revenue Service and in good standing. 501(c)(3) private foundations may be considered on a case-by-case basis. 

  • Governmental agencies for capital expenditures and/or capital improvements
  • Organizations may only receive one award per 12-month period
  • Organizations denied funding may reapply for a different program or project in the same 12-month period, but not for the same project/program
  • If prior funding has been received, all assigned follow-ups with due dates before the grant award date must be completed and accepted prior to applying for additional funding in any Greater Grand Island Community Foundation grant program
  • The Harold R. Dunlap Grant is only for projects and programs located in and around Cairo, NE  
  • All applicants must meet with Foundation staff to discuss their proposed project/program prior to starting the application

Ineligibility

Grants for the following purposes are not eligible:

  • To individuals
  • Religious or political purposes
  • Endowments, capital campaigns, or annual fund drives
  • Fundraising event sponsorships or creation of fundraising event collateral materials
  • Programs that create an indefinite, long-term commitment by Greater Grand Island Community Foundation
  • Request for additional funding for projects/programs that have already been approved and funded
  • For ongoing projects and programs, applicants must address funding for maintenance and operations
  • Incomplete requests

Funding Requests

  • The Harold R. Dunlap Foundation grant program addresses unmet charitable needs and unique program opportunities for essential and emerging issues in Cairo, Nebraska. 

NOTE: The Greater Grand Island Community Foundation rarely funds requests to entirely fund projects or programs.

Evaluation Criteria

The following criteria are utilized by the Distribution Committee when evaluating proposals and making funding recommendations to the Board of Trustees:

  • Submitted application and materials
  • 2030 Vision alignment
  • Current evaluation rubric
  • Knowledge of the organization
  • Prior funding

Preferences

Preference will be given to programs that:

  • Align with 2030 Vision
  • Align with the current evaluation rubric
