While each grant program at GGICF has a specific structure and timeline, most follow a similar process. We tailor each program to fit its goals and applicants, but our commitment to transparency, flexibility, and partnership remains consistent across all opportunities. The grant application process is designed to help nonprofits create well-thought-out projects and programs, not to be burdensome.  

A typical process looks like: 

1. Start with a Conversation 
Every application begins with a conversation with our program officer to confirm eligibility, fit, and potential funding paths. This early connection sets the tone for partnership and helps reduce missteps later. 

2. Support Throughout 
The program officer is available throughout the process to answer questions and provide guidance which may look like providing support around areas of concern or recommending specific improvements to the application. 

3. Opportunities to Clarify 
After applications are submitted, there are typically two opportunities for clarification: first from the program officer and then from the grants committee. We know it can be hard to convey the full story in writing, so we intentionally build in space for conversation and clarification.  

4. Nonprofit Needs Report 
Once finalized, proposed projects and programs are shared with donor-advised fundholders for the opportunity to connect passion with purpose, thereby leveraging the Foundation’s resources to make the greatest impact possible.  

5. Committee Review 
Committee members read and score applications independently, then come together to discuss and reach consensus on funding recommendations. This group approach helps ensure balanced, thoughtful decisions drawing upon the expertise of GGICF trustees with deep finance and nonprofit budgeting experience. 

6. Board Approval & Notification 
Recommendations are submitted to the full board to ensure transparency and oversight of a fair process. Once recommendations are approved, all applicants are notified of the outcome, and application feedback is offered to those who request it. 

7. Funding & Follow-Up 
After signing a grant agreement, funds are released. Most grantees have up to a year to use the funding. At the end of the grant period, we ask for an experience-based follow-up that centers on lessons learned, celebrations, use of funds, and process feedback. The Grant Officer then considers this information to update the process, presents it to the Distribution Committee to close the loop, and shares it with fund holders. 

We strive to keep each process transparent, efficient, and grounded in partnership. The goal of our grant-making program is not just to resource important projects for our community but also to strengthen the nonprofit's capacity through a thoughtful, collaborative process.
